Why Houston Homeowners Are Investing in Backup Power

Texas operates on the ERCOT grid, which serves roughly 90% of the state’s electrical load. Unlike most of the country, ERCOT connects to neighboring US grids only through limited DC ties, which means Texas can’t easily import power from other states during a widespread emergency. When demand spikes or generation fails, the shortfall falls on Texas alone.

That structure made Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 especially damaging. Over 4.5 million Texas households lost power, with some Houston-area residents going without electricity for multiple consecutive days in freezing temperatures. Grid conditions haven’t stabilized since. ERCOT demand has continued hitting record highs through 2026 as Texas population growth and extreme heat push the system to its limits.

Hurricane History Adds to the Risk

Houston sits in a coastal hurricane zone. Hurricane Ike in 2008 caused widespread outages across the greater Houston area, with some neighborhoods waiting weeks for power restoration. Hurricane Harvey in 2017 knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of customers at its peak, and flooding delayed full restoration in parts of Houston for nearly two weeks. Storm frequency and intensity continue to keep outage risk high.

ERCOT’s obligation extends to grid-level reliability, not to any individual home’s power staying on. For Houston homeowners, backup power has become a practical decision, not just a precaution.

Natural Gas Standby Generators vs. Portable Units

The two most common residential options carry very different trade-offs for Houston homeowners.

Standby generators are permanently connected to the home’s electrical system and activate automatically through an automatic transfer switch when grid power is lost. Natural gas models draw fuel from the home’s existing gas line, eliminating the need for refueling during a multi-day outage. They require no setup when power goes out and can run HVAC systems and other major loads depending on the unit’s capacity.

Portable generators offer a lower upfront cost but require manual setup and refueling. They can’t be connected directly to a home’s electrical panel without a proper transfer switch. Running one without a transfer switch creates a dangerous backfeed hazard that can injure utility workers restoring power on the line. Any connection to the home’s wiring requires a licensed electrician and a code-compliant transfer switch.

Most standby generator manufacturers recommend service every six months to maintain reliable operation. A unit that sits unused for years without maintenance may not perform as expected when it’s actually needed.
